Default Tachometer Problem Fixed
Thanks. Your suggestion was very close but the problem turned out to be a (sometimes) slipping alternator belt. Unfortunately, the slipping belt also polished the alternator pulley which worsened things. Apparently, that doesn't take long at five or six thousand RPMs. I learned the hard way to regularly check the belts for tightness.
